چکیده

A stepwise approach was developed in 1993 to handle agricultural damage complaints caused by white-tailed deer {Odocoileus virginianus). Results from 2 seasons were evaluated to determine the effectiveness of the procedures implemented. Approximately half of the damage complaints received were handled by prescribing non-lethal techniques such as fencing, harassment, and repellents. The remainder of the complaints required 1 or more types of lethal control. Although doe harvest rates were similar under the 2 permit options, Damage Control Assistance Permits (DCAP) provided several distinct advantages over out of season shooting using Depredation Permits (DEPR). The DCAP permits increased hunting opportunity, eliminated the need for landowners to expend considerable time and effort shooting deer out of season, and fostered a cooperative relationship between landowners and hunters. Recipients of DCAP tags tended to continue with the program, thereby providing longterm control. Pages 60-62 in R.E. Masters and J.G. Huggins, eds. Twelfth Great Plains Wildl. Damage Control Workshop Proc, Published by Noble Foundation, Ardmore, Okla.

Deer Mice (Peromyscus spp.) Biology, Damage and Management: A Review

The deer mouse is the most widely distributed and abundant small mammal in North America. They use a wide array of habitats, are very adaptable, and have a high reproductive potential. They play a number of roles in ecosystems, but can cause damage to orchards, forests, agriculture crops, and rangelands primarily through seed and newly-emerged seedling consumption. They also cause damage simila...

Relationship between raccoon abundance and crop damage

Wildlife damage to crops is a widespread concern among agricultural producers and wildlife professionals. In the United States, raccoon (Procyon lotor) damage to field corn (Zea maize) has become a serious concern, as raccoon depredation to corn has increased significantly in recent years. However, little information is available to suggest the underlying factors responsible for recent increase...

Extent and Nature of Deer Damage to Commercial Nurseries in New York

We surveyed nursery producers in New York to determine the extent, nature and economic impact of deer damage to their operations, and to assess their attitudes towards deer. Seventy-three percent of the producers experienced deer damage to their crops in 1988. Average costs for replacement were nearly $6,000 per grower for those reporting damage estimates (and over $8,000 if 1 extreme value was...

Exploiting Antipredator Behavior in White-Tailed Deer for Resource Protection

Effects of visual obstruction on white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) include enhanced vigilance and flight-initiation distances. Prior work suggests that artificial visual barriers might enhance perceived risk of predation to deer. During 2008–2010 at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Plum Brook Station (Erie County, OH), we tested the hypotheses that visual obstruction...
